A Victorian View

Over the years I have had many Victorian painted roundels to restore or copy. These small individual quarries bought in an antique shop and now leaded into a panel and en-route to the Isle of Wight illustrate perfectly the Victorian view of nature; wondrous pleasure in the detail of organic life - imagined or actual, scary views of nature red in tooth and claw and frequently served up with a large dose of whimsy.

Who are you calling whimsical?!

Some more Victorian views on nature from another job...

Sunrise in Hither Green!

I recently worked on a beautiful 1920's house in Hither Green. It is a wonderful privelage to get such a good canvas of panels to work on because you know they will completely transform the space.

Here is the before shot...

The customers wanted an Art Deco feel to the house but with more colour than you normally get with classic Art Deco sunburst designs.

Here the colours are pasted up for the door panel and for the sun the customers chose an usual vintage glass that was reclaimed from an Edwardian House.

Beautiful glass but not so great as a whole sheet.

The door panel leaded up.

For the fanlights we adapted some quirky Kees Keiler birds from a 1920's design.

The original Kees Kuiler design below...

Sadly there does not seem to be much information about Kees Kuiler on the web.

Fanlight with 20's font.

The complete set!

I love recycling glass and in the wings of the birds and dotted around the suns rays are some vintage glass used in reclaimed panels that were adapted for the film Black Widow featuring Scarlett Johansson and shown in the background of her sisters flat.
