St Nicholas, Moreton, Purbeck.

We visited this beautiful airy church in Dorset last summer. Following on from wartime damage 13 new windows have been engraved by Lawrence Whistler, over some 30 years (1955 - 1985). It is interesting to see how he honed his skill over time. The last window that he made of Judas Iscariot, was initially rejected by the church, with the panel going to a museum instead. Eventually after Lawrence's death the window was installed but not 'allowed inside' the church so the window can only be viewed from the outside, walking around the church until you find it!

The 13th window - a wall is behind this panel making it appear black. you can just make out that Judas is shown hung by his neck and dropping the silver coins.

The church is now closed following the corona virus pandemic but you can still visit the website to find out more here.

  1. When it comes to stained glass window repair, I think craftsmanship is everything. Poor repairs can ruin the charm of the window, but ARK Stained Glass seems to understand how to protect the original design. I like how they focus on both restoring strength and keeping the artistic details intact. Many homeowners and churches need this type of expert service to ensure the windows last for years to come. From what I’ve read, ARK Stained Glass delivers reliable work that respects tradition while using modern techniques. They seem like a trustworthy choice for anyone with stained glass damage.

  2. Hello Ark Stained Glass, it's always a pleasure to hear from colleagues. I read your missive to my studio neighbour John Mahoney and he raised an eyebrow and laughed? I agree with you about the importance of being a trustworthy choice and it gives me the opportunity to direct you to the repairs page of my website http://www.apollostainedglass.co.uk/category_mre.htm now a bit out of date but where you will see many such examples of the quality craftmanship you admire and where you may find inspiration for your journey!
