Sir John McCoy of Gateshead

Sir John McCoy was a wealthy shipowner who served 8 terms as Mayor of Gateshead between 1912 to 1923. At some point a huge panel entitled 'Navigation' was brought to London from his house 'Springfield'. Sir John had a connection to the London Docklands and the building that later became P and O Ferries where the panel came to rest on the roof of the building. Luckily the panel was salvaged in the 1970's, being lifted off the roof in sections. It is still a huge, confusing mystery how all the many seemingly unrelated parts fit together. Meantime small sections have been cleaned and made into panels of a slightly more convenient size than the estimated 12ft x 12ft original....!

Here's a few 'before' restoration pics from the 4 seasons heads;

Does anyone know the significance of this date for Sir John?

Stunning Stairwell Stained Glass!

This beautiful set of original panels came in for restoration. The stained glass artist really chose their glasses well; a fiery, blazing, streaky orange and a range of textures both clear and coloured lighting up at different times of the day.

A small section has something of a Mondrian about it!

Stained glass reflections...

An amazing collection of vintage mirrors multiplies reflections in this customers house. The door was originally solid, a carpenter cut out the wooden panels and created rebates for the stained glass bringing light and colour into the hall.

The glass used for the flowers was red Muranese in the brighter centre and handmade red glass with bubbles at the sides.

A hall with a view

I recently fitted a set of panels along a street where I have completed 3 door sets, all very different. While there I popped in to see a customer whose job inspired the previous 'butterfly' post. The brief for this job was to bring something of a garden feel to a busy street. The background tints are pale green and pink, and look different as they pick up on the changing scenery behind. You can see more pics of this job here;  http://www.apollostainedglass.co.uk/image_ac19a.htm. Pics of the new job to follow...

Love is like a butterfly...

I recently completed a lovely job which included some favourite flowers; Clematis, Roses, Iris, Jasmine and butterflies; Holly Blue and Cabbage White. For the roses I recycled the lush gold/pink streaky glass from the Chemist panels (earlier blog). Amazing how strong and beautiful this delicate colour can be...
